About the role

AI summarised

Research Engineer focused on metal additive manufacturing processes and systems at SIMTech. The role involves executing LPBF builds, integrating digital systems, maintaining research infrastructure, and contributing to knowledge sharing within the team.

ResearchFull-time

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) builds to support research and experimental work, including build setup, parameter application, in‑process monitoring, and post‑build assessment support.
  • Monitor and analyse LPBF process behaviour to maintain process stability, experimental integrity, and consistency across research trials.
  • Ensure structured and accurate recording of process data—such as machine logs, process parameters, and build metadata—to enable downstream analysis and reproducibility.
  • Apply engineering judgment to identify and diagnose process deviations, machine–process interactions, and build quality issues in alignment with research objectives.
  • Integrate LPBF platforms with sensors, data acquisition hardware, and digital monitoring or control tools.
  • Design and implement laboratory IT and data infrastructure that enables reliable process data capture, storage, and traceability.
  • Develop and support next‑generation automation and control solutions, including PLC / microcontroller‑based systems, embedded interfacing and telemetry, and integration with higher‑level software workflows where appropriate.
  • Build and maintain digital workflows to ensure LPBF process execution consistently meets research data requirements.
  • Maintain LPBF equipment readiness and research continuity by planning calibrations, coordinating maintenance, and engaging equipment vendors to minimise disruptions.
  • Identify process, system, and workflow bottlenecks, and implement engineering‑based improvements that strengthen efficiency, data quality, safety, and reliability.
  • Optimise laboratory layouts and system architecture from a research reliability and digital integration perspective rather than facilities operations.
  • Document configurations, technical changes, and engineering activities clearly to support research reporting, audits, knowledge transfer, and long‑term maintainability of the research infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Precision Engineering, Engineering Science, Advanced Manufacturing, or a closely related field.
  • Technical Competencies
  • Strong grounding in manufacturing process engineering, with specific exposure to LPBF or high‑precision manufacturing systems preferred. Ability to understand and work with complex machine data, control parameters, and system interfaces. Foundational knowledge of hardware–software integration, data acquisition, and industrial IT infrastructure. Experience working in a research or advanced manufacturing environment is an advantage.
  • Professional Attributes
  • Analytical, detail‑oriented, and disciplined in data handling and process documentation. Proactive, improvement‑driven mindset with the ability to propose engineering solutions rather than execute fixed procedures. Strong written and verbal communication skills suitable for research documentation and technical discussions.
